Program Description
The Pre-Masters programme is designed for those students who do not qualify for direct entry to a postgraduate degree at Edinburgh Napier University. The Pre-Masters programme will equip you with the advanced skills you need to complete your postgraduate study at Edinburgh Napier University. You can study this over one or two terms depending on your academic qualifications and English language level. Professional Communication for Postgraduate Study The module focuses on the aims, scope and nature of communication within a professional context. It aims to introduce and develop communication skills directly relevant to the workplace and, in particular, to interactions in the business world. While maintaining this focus, the module also strengthens and develops English language skills relevant to the study of Business in an international context and through academic business investigation. You explore and interpret business source materials and use these and other learning materials to enhance your understanding of how businesses work in practice and, in particular, how good and poor communications along with cultural differences and perceptions can influence the effectiveness of business processes. Introduction To Management The main aim of this module is to develop a greater understanding of some of the key activities and functions associated with establishing and managing a business. During your study of the module you will review the legal bases of different types of businesses, consider the nature and impact of varying management styles, learn about the fields of operations management and organisational behaviour and reflect on how change is introduced and managed within a business setting. Statistics And Data Handling The course offers a grounding in statistics, with an emphasis on practical applications within a business context, involving extensive use of the Excel spreadsheet and its associated functions. The module’s specific aims are to introduce you to the importance of mathematical techniques in a particular academic and professional context, to emphasise the importance of effective presentation of statistical data and to provide you with the background to make decisions about the relative importance of particular methods of collecting, collating and displaying data. Introduction To Business Functions The overall aim of this course is to provide you with a basic introduction to the study of business and management by introducing you to the standard departments within a business, such as finance, marketing and human resource management. The course covers the different types of businesses, business set-up, planning and financing of developments, considerations in marketing the company’s products or services, the importance of issues around work and people in organisations and how businesses respond to and manage change, quality control and strategic management.
