Program Description

Some of the hardest things we do in life happen at home. Raising children. Relating to a spouse. Coping with financial pressures. Dealing with substance abuse. In CMU's family studies program, you'll build the skills to help others confront these challenges and many others. Change somebody's life for the better. That's what our family studies major prepares you to do. As a graduate of this hands-on program, you will help families and individuals rebuild their skills and improve their quality of life. You'll become an expert in: Advocacy. Community programming and evaluation. Family policy. Educational intervention. We combine in-depth discussions of theory and research with first-hand application of what you've learned. A required internship gives you the chance to step into the real world before graduation. You can even study abroad, where you can experience other cultures, communities, and family units as part of a class. Graduates go on to work in the field or pursue further education. With proper training, our alums find careers in marriage and family therapy, counseling, social work, law, public policy, family research, and college instruction.
