Program Description

The Musical Theatre BA (Hons) program at the University of Portsmouth focuses on equipping students with the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to excel in the field of musical theatre. This program marries singing, dancing, and acting, offering training and development in a range of performance techniques, including voice training, movement, and dramatic interpretation, to create well-rounded performers for the theatre industry. Students will be participating in various forms of genres from classical to contemporary musical theatre. They will receive training in a full range of disciplines – including acting techniques, dance, and vocal coaching. Students are also provided high-level performances opportunities to fine-tune their acting, singing, and dancing skills, preparing them for a successful career in the ever-competitive world of musical theatre. Moreover, students have the opportunity to take part in performances at local venues, as well as the chance to create and run their own theatre company in their final year. The program also integrates the academic study of musical theatre’s history, genres, styles and contexts. In this way, this program not just focuses on developing the individual performance abilities but also contributes to the students' understanding of the broader field of theatre. Students will learn from industry-experienced staff, who will support them in developing their skills and guide them in carving a path for their future careers. Whether students' interests lie in performing, directing, teaching or something else, this course equips them with the skills they need to succeed.
