Program Description

Make a lasting difference in the lives of young people. Our sociology major with a concentration in youth studies will prepare you to work in a community or school program focused on youth. A major in sociology with a concentration in youth studies gives you a better understanding of the sociology of adolescence and childhood and prepares you to work with young people in a variety of settings. You’ll examine the impact of gender, ethnicity and social class on youth development. You’ll explore subjects such as family; adolescence; childhood and education; and youth welfare. You’ll get real-world experience through service learning in a local school or agency. And you’ll gain the skills to create effective youth development programs. CMU is the nation’s first and only school to offer a youth studies concentration in the sociology major as well as a youth studies minor.
