Program Description

The University of Manitoba’s Bachelor of Arts - Italian program is a 3-4 year degree program that allows students to master the Italian language and acquire cultural knowledge. An emphasis is placed on language skills as well as in inter-cultural skills. The Italian courses offered at the University of Manitoba not only teach grammar and contemporary literature but also touch upon Italian culture and history. In-class opportunities for conversation and comprehension are abundant and designed to facilitate practical experience in using the language. Guest lecturers are brought in to speak on a variety of subjects, and there are frequent film showings. There is a wide variety of options in the job market for Italian speakers worldwide. Proficiency in Italian improves career prospects and helps foster social and economic benefits for Canada in, for example, the fields of tourism, education, international law, commerce, education and sport. With the internationalization of the job market, graduates with a qualification in Italian will have greater employment opportunities. Students of Italian have access to a vast network of international cultural resources in areas such as fashion, design, science, architecture, literature, theatre, cinema, fine arts, music, opera and dance. Italy is a world leader in machine tool manufacturing, with advanced technologies in robotics, electromechanical machinery, shipbuilding, space engineering, construction machinery, and transportation equipment. Italy is also a world leader in the culinary arts, interior design, fashion, graphic design, furniture design, etc. Those planning careers in such fields greatly benefit from knowing Italian.
