Program Description
As an academic discipline, Religious Studies does not promote nor undermine any particular religion or worldview; it approaches the study of religion as a social phenomenon, recognizing that religions have occupied a very central place in virtually all civilizations. The program focuses on the relationship between religion and culture. It is administered by a Joint Department of Religious Studies, comprised of the departments of Religious Studies from the University of Sudbury, Huntington University and Thorneloe University, all situated on the Laurentian campus. The program focuses on four main areas of study: Biblical Studies, World Religions, Western Religions, and Religion and Culture. It offers a broad overview of the discipline with courses including Christian thought, Buddhism, Indigenous tradition and culture, Eastern mysticism, the paranormal, bioethics, social issues, Western morality, Judaism, Hinduism, Apocalyptic and the Book of Revelation.
