Program Description

At the University of Portsmouth, the BA (Hons) English and Creative Writing program combines the analytical skills of the English Literature degree with the creative skills of a Creative Writing degree, providing students a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of the written word. This program is designed to develop the individual's talent for writing while enabling them to reflect critically on their own work. Throughout the program, students will study a range of traditional genres and contemporary writing. They will engage with narratology, authorship and the history of the English language, alongside developing their own creative voice through a series of workshops and creative exercises. The courses also encourage students to tackle contemporary issues and develop new modes of expression. The program is strongly oriented towards employability with opportunities for internships and visits to London literary festivals, publishing houses, and other relevant sites. This is complimented by a dedicated team of experienced faculty that guide the students at every step. By the end of the program, graduates are prepared with the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience to pursue a wide variety of careers, ranging from writing, editing, publishing, marketing, teaching, and much more in the creative industries.
